A job or careers fair can be both an amazing opportunity and a source of terror. At worst it can feel somewhere between a speed dating night and a Friday night meat market. But there are several tips that can help you make the most of the day.
Planning is the big key. Try to get a copy of the list of company’s that will be at the even and work out which are your main priorities. This will help you work out a “plan of attack” so that you don’t run out of time — though of course you can always pick a couple of less important targets to visit first so that you get warmed up and overcome any nervousness.
At the same time, don’t get obsessed to the point of ignoring other companies at the event. You never know: your dream employer could literally be just around the corner, so keep your eyes open. Don’t automatically dismiss companies as a potential source of jobs: Birmingham-based firms might seem a waste of time if you don’t live in the West Midlands, but they may have vacancies in other regions, or could even tip you off about jobs with some of their suppliers or corporate customers.
Take care of the practicalities. You’ll need plenty of copies of your CV and contact details. Make sure you have plenty of working pens and a notepad, or the 21st century electronic equivalent, as many firms may give you a web or e-mail address so you can apply online.
It’s also well worth getting a haircut and cleaning your best suit or smart dress: spending a bit extra is more bearable when you think of it as if it were multiple interviews on the same day.
Work on your “elevator pitch”, a few sentences to explain who your are and what skills and experience you have. But do remember to tweak it if needed and show you’ve paid attention to the company you are approaching.
Don’t forget to talk to other jobseekers: you never know who might have heard of a job that isn’t for them, but is just up your street.
